Anyone who loves to
swim will want to be in Key West on Saturday,
June 13th for an epic swim race around the island. The
FKCC Swim Around Key West
is an open water race for either relay teams or individuals. If you are up to
the challenge, you can swim
12.5 miles
around Key West, starting and ending at Higgs Beach. Registration is open
until
June 12th. The race
is slated to begin at
7:30 a.m. and
will
benefit local swimming programs
such as Florida Keys
Community College’s program, the
Key’s Bone Island Swim Club and Key West High School’s swim team. There will be
an awards party at 5:30 held at the Higgs Beach Pavilion.
Swimmers from near
and far will be converging in Key West, from across the country, Canada and
elsewhere to compete in the race. There are award categories by age groups from as young as 8 years old on up to 70+.
The course for the race will take swimmers clockwise around the island into the
waters of both the Atlantic and Gulf of
Mexico. Swimmers will make
their way around the Southernmost Point marker which marks the southernmost tip
of land within the mainland United States. For those not up to swimming all the
way around the island, there are other races being held as well. You can join
in an 800 yard, 1 mile or 2 mile
race if you like, along a buoy-marked course off of Higgs Beach. These shorter
races will begin at 8:30 in the morning.
This will also be an
amazing sight to see if you are not one to get in the water. Imagine the hundreds of swimmers making their way
all around the island en masse. With each team or individual swimmer required
to have a team alongside in either a boat or a kayak, the waters surrounding
the island will be full of spectacle. There will be safety boat crews all around as well, and they will be recognizable
by their pirate flags on each
vessel. As a spectator you will have plenty of key places to choose for a great
viewing point. The route will take swimmers from Key West Harbor, under the Flemming
Key Bridge, around Sigsbee and
under Cow Key Bridge, then past Smathers Beach and the White Street Pier to finish where it
began, at Higgs Beach.
Swimming in our warm
waters is truly a part of the Keys way of life. If you are ready to
enjoy a warm, fun way of life for yourself, and are looking at the Key West
area, my team and I are here to help you with finding the home of your dreams.
