Earth Day is coming up this April 22nd; a day to take
care of and celebrate the earth around the world. There are thousands of
activities that will be going on all over the planet on Earth Day as people
show how much they care for their little corner of the world. This year marks
the 45th anniversary of Earth
Day, which has brought communities, leaders, environmentalists, and
citizens together to find ways to better the world through environmentally
sound activities. Key West and the Florida Keys provide a special approach to
Earth Day, and what you can do to take part. Our unique marine sanctuaries and coral reefs are central to our
lifestyle, and take center stage in Earth Day celebrations that are coming up
this year.
You can get an early start to your
Earth Day celebration and participation with the 18th Annual Earth Day 5k Run and Walk. This is coming up Saturday
April 11th at McCoy Indigenous Park in Key West. The top overall
runners, masters, and first & second place male and female will all get
earth-friendly, edible awards to commemorate their achievements. All proceeds
will go to help Last Stand, a
nonprofit dedicated to protecting and preserving the way of life here in the
Keys, in particular the natural environment we so cherish.
Immerse yourself in the beauty of
the Keys on Earth day, April 22nd at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. Extended hours
are being offered to help celebrate Mother Nature at her finest. While the
gardens normally close at 4:00 pm, for this special day, from 4:00 pm to 7:30
pm you can not only enjoy an evening picnic in this lush tropical paradise, you
can do so free of charge.
The ultimate way to celebrate Earth
Day is to volunteer. On April 23rd from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm the Marathon Dolphin Research Center is
asking for volunteers to join them as they collect trash and debris at Tom’s Harbor Bridge, mile marker 62.
Bring a reusable cup for yourself, bug repellent, sunscreen, and a cutting tool;
the research center will provide water throughout the cleanup, trash bags, as
well as gloves. The cleanup will begin on the south side of the bridge, and is
a wonderful way to help take care of our corner of the earth. You can learn
more about this special cleanup event at the Dolphin ResearchCenter’s Facebook Page.
Be sure to join the 20th Annual Earth Day Celebration at Bahia HondaState Park in the Lower Keys at Mile Marker
36.8. From 9:00 am to 2:00 pm you can enjoy live music, food, and activities
for the whole family; all centered around local
environmental groups and actions being taken in the Keys to improve and
protect the earth. There will be exhibit
booths and interactive activities going on throughout the day, including
two marine touch tanks, a sand sculpture contest, fish print painting, and so
much more. The celebration is free with
standard park admission. Bring the whole family and celebrate the earth at
one of our greatest natural treasures of the keys.
However
you choose to celebrate Earth Day, I hope you find a way to connect with the
