Oceanfront Park, located behind Marathon’s City Hall
at 98th Street has been given the green light for continued construction.
The City Council recently voted to move forward with the next phase of the
park. As Marathon’s newest city park,
Oceanfront Park construction began back in 2012 and has been worked on in
phases based on funding grants from the Monroe County Tourist Development
Council. The 7.94 acre park is open free of charge to the public and provides access to the Overseas Heritage
Paddling Trail, a prime kayaking route along the Keys.
Since the project was begun there have been tiki
huts added and an extended boardwalk along the park. There are ADA compliant facilities and access
throughout the park including a pavilion and platform on the Oceanside. Dog
lovers have a field for their pets, and
even a dog swim ramp at the water as well. The next phase of the park’s
construction includes a bridge over a canal which will lead to an observation platform with two spotting
scopes, one of which is ADA compliant, and will give visitors a close up
view of the area landscapes. There will be an educational approach to the park
as well with informative plaques to be included in the pavilion areas of the
park. It is expected to be a haven for water recreation, families, school kids,
fishers and tourists alike.
The
latest phase of construction at Oceanfront Park will cost $91,800,
half of which will be covered by the Tourist Development Council via bed-tax
money garnered from hotel and other accommodation bed fees charged in the city.
The other half of the project will be funded by the City of Marathon. You can
view the proposed plan of the park at the Cityof Marathon website for more details of the final
plan. Marathon’s Oceanfront Park is just one more jewel of place you can enjoy
in the Keys. If you are ready to find a
