Many people come to Key West for many different reasons. Some come to visit. Some come to play in the sand and surf. But some come to live. For anyone interested in Key West, whether to visit or live, the area has a rich cultural background.
As with much of the United States, Key West was first inhabited by Native Americans who enjoyed the rich food supply and fertility of the costal lands, then the Key was claimed by other invading forces. In its rich history Key West has been claimed by Spain, Cuba, and Brittan then finally, it was declared part of the United States, and still is today.
When the Native Americans inhabited Key West, the best way to get there was by boat. Better access to the Key was provided by Henry Morrison Flagler who built the Florida East Coast Railway from Homestead to Key West. Though the railway was destroyed in 1935, the Overseas Highway was built in 1938, and still stands today as U.S. Route 1. The roadway now consists of 126 miles and over 40 bridges connecting the tiny islands known as the Florida Keys.
The rich history of Key has given the area many different styles of homes, from beachside cottages to plantation and Spanish style homes. In the evenings, you can find people gathered in Sunset Celebration at the Mallory Dock, where the sun gets tucked in by jugglers, mimes, musicians and street artists.
As dusk moves into night, the streets are filled with sidewalk cafes, open-air bars, legendary pubs and world-class restaurants. No matter what your tastes are, you are sure to find some specialties of the island. The stages have all types of entertainment that include drama, musicals and comedy. Basically, Key West is a warm-hearted place where all are welcome.
