Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 27th through June 2nd in the United States. Most often when we talk about hurricanes everyone thinks about the Gulf, East Coast, North Carolina Barrier Islands and the Florida Keys. We all know that hurricanes by other names affect other parts of the world. But did you know that hurricanes can affect the Midwestern and central United States?

These storms may be just high winds, rain, and tornados spawned by the invading hurricane, but these things still are from the hurricane itself. So it sounds like whether we are in Key West or Flint Michigan we all need to get prepared for hurricane season.

Hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th each year, with the highest concentration usually being between August and November. There have been times when hurricanes came in earlier or later in the year, but these are rare occasions.

No matter when or where these storms hit, it is a good idea to make sure you have a plan in place to help you and your family make it through till help comes. The University of Florida has a web site with everything from a Disaster Handbook to a link to the American Red Cross disaster web-site for disaster classes if you are interested.

The Tourist Development Council (TDC) keeps residents and tourists informed of possible sever weather any time of the year. This organization was developed by the citizens of the Keys to make sure traveling to their beautiful island is fun and safe.

Some of the items you should remember when traveling to Key West during hurricane season include knowing where to find emergency information. Make sure you know where to find the emergency radio station and listen to evacuation warnings when they are issued and pay special attention to life guards when they issue warnings. These storms, whether hurricane or tropical storm, can cause high winds, storm surges and rip currents that all affect individuals swimming or boating in the ocean.

Living or visiting Key West can be one of the most exciting times of your life. Don’t let a little bad weather ruin your time with us. Make sure to understand how storms affect the island and you will have the time of your life, no matter what the weather brings.
