What could be better than watching the sunset and then strolling a short distance to a place where you can spend a wonderful evening? Florida Monthly Magazine has named Key West's Waterfront Playhouse the best professional theatre in Florida for two years in a row. This is no accident. The Playhouse has been providing the area with outstanding entertainment for over seventy years.
While the Playhouse presents top flight professional entertainment, this is a not-for-profit organization. They utilize much of the local Key West talent, and there is a considerable pool of it in this town, but they also bring in world class professionals. The theatrical fare at this Mallory Square location is eclectic to say the least.
For example, the Playhouse was chosen to be the location for the world premier of Carl Hiaasen’s Lucky You. Other past favorites of Key West residents include, Reefer Madness, Lend Me a Tenor Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels and Gore Vidal’s The Best Man.
The winter season’s offerings promise to be great! First up, running from December 20 to January 14 is August: Osage County, the winner of both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for Best Play. The New York Times stated, “August: Osage County is flat-out, without qualifications, the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years.” KeyTV will be sponsoring this play that has been called a “raucous dark comedy.” Tickets can be purchased either at the lobby box office or online.
Whether you’re a performer, an artist, or just someone who likes the beauty of nature, an evening at the Waterfront Playhouse is just one more reason to want to live in beautiful Key West.
