Key West International - Southernmost Airport In the Continental U.S.

The history of Key West's International Airport started with a daring flight by a man named Augustin Parla in 1913. He had no compass to guide him and his goal was to fly to Cuba, so he carried a Cuban flag on his bi-wing seaplane when he departed Key West. Augustin landed in the sea near Mariel, Cuba and sailors rescued him.

Today, the Key West International Airport has a single runway, but is served by several major air carriers including US Airways, Delta, and AirTran. In 2009 a new 30,000 square foot terminal opened with parking for 300 cars. Travelers from all over the world are served by our airport, which is located on the northeast end of Key West. Many flights come through Miami.

Major milestones in the history between Augustin's flight in 1913 and the modern airport today include Pan American Airlines’ start in 1928.  Pan Am was the United States' main international airlines until it suffered financially and was sold to American Airlines and Delta in 1991, but did you know it all started in Key West?

A Key West resident, Juan Terry Trippe, had the goal, "To provide mass air transportation for the average man at rates he can afford to pay" and started an airline called Pan American. Juan got the U.S. contract for delivering mail between the U.S. and Cuba in 1927, and in January 1928 his F-7 carried the first seven commercial passengers between Key West and Havana. Soon after with the arrival of F10's with a longer range, the airport was moved to Miami. However, it all started in Key West!

The building that was home to the original Pan Am Airport still stands today. It is now Kelly's Caribbean Bar Grill and Brewery on Whitehead Street. Today when you eat at Kelly's you can view Pan Am memorabilia including uniforms, photos, and ads.
