Key West’s Schooner Western Union –A Great Tall Ship

Western_union2
The last tall ship assembled in Key West 69 years ago is proudly sailing once again in Key West. This schooner, the Western Union, was originally launched on April 7, 1939, specifically as a cable-laying schooner by Thompson Enterprises of Key West. The ship was leased to the Western Union Telegraph Company for 35 years and had two engines to keep her steady at sea while laying cable. This beautiful vessel made of mahogany and yellow pine must hold some incredible tales of her work on the high seas for over 3 decades.

The Western Union recently underwent a two-year $1 million restoration and resumed sailing in May of this year. A not-for-profit corporation was created to restore, maintain, and operate the ship as the Schooner Western Union Maritime Museum in Key West. The Monroe County Tourist Development Council and the Historic Foundation of the Florida Keys provided grants and donations of over $700,000.  Many local individuals and businesses have contributed to the fund allowing the Western Union to once again sail in Key West waters.

Every sunset in Key West is beautiful, but to experience the sunset on this beautiful ship is a very special sunset experience! The Western Union is available for weddings and private parties. Plans are in place to soon offer day sails and stargazer sails on the ship.  It is also planned to offer historical tours which will highlight the history of the schooner as well as the lifestyle of the crew and maritime history of Key West.

The Western Union is now Key Wests flagship. It truly is a salute to the Key West community for saving this tall ship, preserving a valuable part of the maritime history, and allowing another generation to appreciate the majesty of this schooner. Here’s a glimpse of the Western Union after the restoration.

The Western Union and Key West’s efforts for her preservation reflect the positive spirit of history and caring in Key West.  I am ready to assist you in finding many more positive aspects about living in this paradise. Give me a call today.   JimmyLane: 305-766-0585.
