August 6 is the start of lobster season that lasts through March. The pros come to Key West for their lobster catches now. According to the captain on Dream Catcher Charters, the flats fishing and reef fishing will be great during the month of August. He reported large catches of mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, grouper, and yellowtail snapper last week.
