Local Key West resident, Eric Holowacz, had a vision - to create support for the local art scene and give encouragement to future artists. His vision became reality with The Studios of Key West (TSKW). Currently under the direction of Jay Scott, the mission of supporting artists and the creative community continues and moves forward as the organization's website states, ". . . to forge new collaborations that celebrate and advance Key West's unique sense of place."

The Studios of Key West has formed successful partnerships with other local organizations such as The Arts Council, the Bahama Village Music Program and The Red Barn Theatre. The extensive calendar of events includes exhibitions, lectures, classes, workshops, concerts, and artist residencies. The Studios of Key West has truly become a creative center for the island and beyond.

During the month of June, Chappelle Letman, master sculptor, will be the artist-in-residence at TSKW. Chappelle has been blind for the past 20 years and, as his bio on the TSKW website states, he believes his loss of sight has given him a true artistic vision. He works with the spirit of the stone when he carves it.

The One Human Family exhibit will be on display the entire month of June, as well as the exhibit of Botanicals and Geometrics by Claire Perrault. The One Human Family exhibit contains works in all mediums, and it represents the theme of "unity and equality of all people". Perrault's exhibit contains prints showing her exploration of different printing techniques. She is a local artist and manages Guild Hall Gallery on Duval Street.

The Studios of Key West has been housed in the old Armory Building since 2006.  This building on White Street, constructed in 1903, served as a drill hall and armory for the Florida State militia. From drill hall to artists' studios and exhibition space is quite a change, but always the proud building has served Key West well. Restoration of the building continues with the partnership of TSKW and The Historic Florida Keys Foundation.

There are many local Key West events held at The Armory. The Armory Main Hall and Sculpture Garden are rented for parties, dinners, receptions, and other events. On the third Thursday of each month, artists hold open studios during the "Walk on White" from 6-9 p.m.  Residents and visitors chat with the artists, tour the studios, and view the works in progress.

Check out the 2010-2011 TSKW Catalog. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
