One of Key West’s local artists has created a “living piece of art” that is known as The Secret Garden. The well-known artist, Nancy Forrester, created her Secret Garden on the last one acre of undeveloped land in the heart of Key West’s “old town.” This small pristine tropical forest has survived in spite of development all around its perimeter and the occasional hurricane.
The Secret Garden is known around the world for its beautiful shade palms, ferns, orchids, bright gingers, gumbo-limbo trees, rare and endangered plants and its delightful parrots. Although publicity features the garden’s beauty as an attraction for visitors to Key West, Nancy’s purpose for the garden goes beyond the beauty. Nancy describes herself as an eco-artist. She considers the land not as a “setting for her work,” but part of the art itself. Nancy states on her website, “This is beauty with a purpose . . . the Secret (Garden) will cast a magic spell on you. You will metamorphose into an environmental activist.” For Nancy this special place is part of her vision and dedication to restoring balance to the natural world, not only in Key West but to the world. She intends to educate and encourage others to do the same.
Several rescued parrots are fortunate to call The Secret Garden “home.” At one time there were 100 parrots, but Nancy has since limited the brood to about 20. Most of the parrots have been nursed back to health after being abandoned by former owners. Visitors enjoy the amusing antics and personalities of Nancy’s special parrots.
