Although Memorial Day Weekend may be the undeclared "first weekend of summer", and brings more visitors and vacationers to Key West, it is important to remember WHY we have this long weekend to relax and enjoy the events. Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May which is May 30th this year. Although the day was originally known as Decoration Day and honored soldiers who died in the Civil War, the day now honors all who died while in military service.
One of the services to honor our fallen veterans in the Florida Keys is held each year about 80 miles from Key West at the Islamorada Hurricane Monument. This monument was erected in 1937 to honor Veterans and others killed in the Hurricane of 1935. During the depression, as part of a government relief program, over 600 World War II Veterans were in the Keys helping to build bridges between the islands. Over 500 of these Veterans died on September 2, 1935 during the Labor Day Hurricane.
The Memorial Day presentation starts at 9:00 a.m. at mile marker 81.5. Welcome remarks and the history of the monument will be given by Irving Eyster, President of the Matecumbe Historical Trust. The service will include a laying of the wreath, taps, and benediction.
Many other events in Key West will provide fun and festivity during the Memorial Day Weekend. They may not be related directly to the memory of fallen veterans, but as we celebrate and play this weekend, let us remember those who died to preserve the freedom we celebrate.
On May 28th the 10th Annual Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational will be held in Key West. Those who enter pay a fee of $750 per boat. There will be $13,000 in prizes awarded. Call 305-304-7674 for more information.
A wonderful celebration of Cuban American heritage will be celebrated from Friday, May 27th to Sunday, May 29th. Cuban roots in Key West began when thousands of Cubans fled to freedom during Cuba's War of Independence from Spain in 1868. Many of those who fled to Key West were skilled cigar makers. Key West became the cigar capital of the world by the late 1800's.
The Cuban American Heritage Festival starts with a Coast to Coast Conga Line at 8:00 on Friday, May 27th. Participants will gather at the Southernmost House and the conga line will wind from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico and end at Mallory Square.
