Sculpture Key West Exhibition Through April 15

Sculpture Key West began in 1995 when a handful of local sculptors exhibited their work on the seawall near Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. The exhibit quickly grew and the creator, local sculptor Jim Racchi, established the exhibition as a not-for-profit organization in 2002. Today it is an internationally recognized exhibit that includes world-renowned artists.

As stated on the organization’s website, “The exhibit is    designed to inspire and educate the community of the             Florida Keys and its visitors while offering opportunities for emerging and established artists”.  Sculpture Key West also benefits local school children with its education and outreach programs. In collaboration with local art and photography teachers from the Key West High School and Florida Keys Community College, over 200 students this past year had the opportunity to study sculpture and how it relates to other courses of study.

According to a recent Miami Art Guide article,   “. . .  highlights of the 2011 exhibition are a 10-foot winged Italian coffee pot created by a sculptor from Naples, Italy, a pixilated stainless steel

“Square Wave” that thrives on ambient color and reflection, an ethereal hanging assemblage of densely colored petals and light, a calypso music sound installation, a breathing rock and a 15-foot-tall palm tree pencil by Key West artist Jon McIntosh.

Sculptors in this year’s exhibit are from South Korea, Italy and nine different states in the US. They are all leaders in the international and national field of sculpture. The Miami Art Guide lists the participating sculptors who were selected by a jury led by Lilly Wei, an acclaimed New York curator and art critic. Names include Lynn Umlauf, John Boone, Myung Gyun You, Markus Baenzier, and Key West residents Susan Johnson, Randy Detrick and Jon McIntosh.

The sculptures this year are located at the Key West Garden Club, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, and the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden. All of the sculptures are for sale and more information is available on purchasing sculptures or commissioning one of the artists by calling 305-295-3800.
